Miscellaneous useful information for coaches’ players and other interested people

HOT OF THE PRESS (well not really I see the publish date is ‘07)

  • Shirley, Paul. 2007. CAN I KEEP MY JERSEY? Villard Books. New York.
  • None-the-less a great read for Basketball junkies. A revealing look at the post NCAA basketball life of one Paul Shirley, 6′10″ center out of IOWA State. At Iowa State he played for coach Floyd (read what is going down at USC). Paul received a degree, yes it does happen, in engineering. His book spans four years, five countries and 11 teams.

This should be a required reading for all Edmonton (what’s their name this year? Relax I am kidding) ENERGY players. After reading this they will realize just how good they have it! (God I sound like my mom). Shirley’s writing style is awesome, parenthetical and caustic pop to mind.

In my pursuit of information regarding motion analysis I came across these two articles.
    DUKE
    WVU Bob Huggins

ESC has set a course to embrace the technology used at top NCAA schools; we seek to become the premier provider of motion analysis as it applies to the individual skill of shooting (we have along journey ahead to be sure, but please let me know who else is doing ANYTHING in this area!)

We are the only camp that currently has this focus. ESC has a staged, incremental developmental strategy that will see senior campers benefiting from taping of their shot. Over time the hope is to be able to provide each senior camper with a DVD of his or her shooting form and suggestions for improvement.

  • Oliver, Dean. 2004. Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis. Brassey’s, Inc. Washington, D.C.
  • this book is for those who wish to view the game from OUT SIDE THE BOX. Old coaches seeking a challenge may wish to understand the game from a different perspective. After reading they will comment ” yah you know turn-overs are bad”.

Concepts of offensive and defensive efficiency are discussed and revealed along with a compendium of rule changes, their dates and the corresponding impact on the game.

Interesting fodder as we move into the 24 second clock era… Perhaps one could then extrapolate that by 2011 we will be at the 20 second clock era then the 15 second clock era… then by 2025 the 10 second clock. Look for the four corners revival by 2050!

  • Kriegel, Mark. 2007. Pistol: The life of Pete Maravich. Free Press. Toronto, Canada.
  • you might think about reading this book. Why?
a)’cause everyone else will so why be left out?
    b) Large philosophical questions will be scrutinized …
    c) Nature vs Nurture and should you coach your own kids?
….I can think of one person that shouldn’t have.
    Great Father’s Day gift
